Google Plans Massive Online Storage Service: Would You Trust Your Entire Hard Drive On Its Rumored GDrive?
Google is preparing to offer online storage to Web users, creating a mirror image of data stored on consumer hard drives, according to company documents that were mistakenly released on the Web and reported by Reuters today.
The existence of the previously rumored GDrive online storage service surfaced after a blogger discovered apparent notes in a slide presentation by Google executives published on Google's site after its analysts presentation day last Thursday."With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)," the notes in the original Google presentation state.
Chief Executive Eric Schmidt in his presentation made a cryptic comment that one goal of Google was to "store 100 percent" of consumer information.
Also during this conference with market analysts, Google reportedly uploaded by mistake huge internal financial projections, which Schmidt says were "not accurate".
Whoa, just remember the "Do No Evil" mantra, guys. With the China site censorship and the Time/Newsweek covers, is Google getting closer and closer to that "jumping the shark" moment? Up until recently, it seems everyone was happy as the world became more Googled. Is the world starting to turn? This IS a media trend worth watching for 2006...
