An Oscar Phone Poll Just For Fun -- Crash over Brokeback?
Shortly after Alexander Graham Bell invented his telephone, phone polls have been around measuring people's likes and dislikes.
Phone polling remains a critically-important tool for media and market researchers -- including for Joint Communications -- to help understand public opinion and media trends. But it's getting harder and harder to get people to participate, for several reasons, including being contacted too much; beign confused for an abusive telemarketer selling something; not seeing opinions make a difference to improve products after previous interviews; political pollsters manipulating public opinion; not having time; or worse of all, no interest in sharing an opinion.
Oh, sure, whenever we get a phone call from a pollster, the first reflex is to say no. Sometimes, though, phone polls can be productive. This past week, The Harris Poll telephoned people nationally to get them to cast their own vote about who should win an Oscar Sunday night. And one in five of them want Crash to best Brokeback Mountain in the best-picture race. Some 32% of the 1,016 respondents are hoping Joaquin Phoenix walks away with the best actor trophy. But the Harris Poll is purely for giggles — only Academy members' votes count on Sunday. Let's see if the public opinion matches the Academy -- or how far off they are.
