Air America says it's "Business as usual" and "Much stronger than a year ago" despite recent gossip
There's been some online blogging gossip getting picked up by the mainstream newspapers and outlets questioning the current health of Air America Radio lately, as it has lost a couple of affiliates in the last month (it now stands at 86, including on XM radio). The concern is over Air America's homebase NYC broadcast deal using Inner City's WLIB. Radio hounds are wondering aloud whether or not there will be a lease extension/renewal come this April 1st, when Air America turns 2 years old.
According to InsideRadio:Air America Radio CEO Danny Goldberg hears the chatter from bloggers and says "consider the source" - "in almost all cases, the people who say bad things about our company's business are conservative idealogues who have a particular interest in damaging Air America." He also vows that "Air America will continue to be on in New York City" and that "It's business as usual."
We at the Jointblog hope Air America Radio keeps figuring out a way to survive and grow (and improve the local signal strength). There certainly are blogging fans as well as major critics. Some -- like the Drudge Report and "Radio Equalizer" seem to take special glee whenever they can bruise.
For example, as reported in today's NYPost article today: RadioEqualizer blogger Brian Maloney - who blew the whistle on questionable loans to the lefty network last year - published the first report Friday that WLIB was on the verge of evicting Air America some time soon. Losing its New York outlet would be a serious blow to the fledgling liberal radio network.
Rumors say former Jacor/Clear Channel radio head honcho may be to make a run at WLIB, adding more pressure to Air America...stay tuned.
