Joint Communications At The Annual CMW Conference: Highlights in 60 seconds on "How To Make Radio Matter In The Future"
The annual Canadian Music Week Conference was held in Toronto March 1-5 and Joint Communications was there participating in several sessions. Joint Communications' CEO John Parikhal moderated the panelists discussing "How To Make Radio Better In The Future".
Getting better utilizing the web to distribute custom on-air content is key.
Quoting John, "Most radio stations sub-optimize their websites." The recent example of the Aerosmith hit "Janie's Got A Gun" made into a parody called "Cheney's Got A Gun" made fun of the embarrassing hunting mishap by vice-president Dick Cheney. Says John, "Radio should have jumped on that and provided a link to the song on their website," said Parikhal. "When radio jumps on the moment and turns it around - that's the very best thing they can do."
The session's main highlights:
• Talent will be radio’s future
• Content is King – and it will be delivered over lots of pipelines
• In Canada, regulators must be less ideological and more flexible
• “Super short” commercials might be an innovation
• TSL will drop slightly
• Radio will become positioned as a reach medium
• Creative people will be more valuable
• Broadband wireless is a threat
• Radio is sub-optimizing the internet (including their sites)
