Jon Stewart and Some Oscar Haikus
A little prep for this weekend's Oscars...
Most previews appear to be positive and hopeful for Jon Stewart as first-time host. It certainly needs some freshening up. With the 5 Best Picture nominees non-mainstream-oriented, Stewart seems a perfect match. All eyes are scanning the Daily Show comedian for signs of weakness and nerves in the days leading up to the biggest gig of his life.
The Defamer blog asks: "Will he manage the required mix of measured irreverence and exuberance, a la Billy Crystal or Steve Martin? Or would he falter with something closer to Chris Rock’s “In your FACE, fat ego movie stars!” routine that both fell flat and suggested the biggest ego in the room was probably his own?" Hopefully, he'll bring his "Moment in Zen" self and not try to out-dance Billy Crystal's opener extravaganza.
Here's what some of the news services articles are saying about Jon Stewart:
AP: Oscars Host Stewart Prepares for Big Stage
Metaphor for the Big Gig: “Jon Stewart just won the Heisman—the comedians’ version.”
NY Times: A First-Time Oscar Host in Search of That Fine Line
Metaphor for the Big Gig: “…like a gadfly who rails against City Hall for years, only to wake up and find himself elected mayor…”
USA Today: Jon Stewart looks Oscar in the eye
Metaphor for the Big Gig: “…a new ringmaster of the Oscars…”
From the OscarWatch blog, some excellent Oscar Haikus to get you into the mood (5 syllables the first line, 7 the second, 5 the third):
