Most Popular Canadian Radio Stations Online (By Alexa, June 2009)
Alexa.com is an Amazon.com-owned web traffic analytic tool that estimates website usage. It's not as precise or accurate as comScore, MediaMetrics, Nielsen or other more sophisticated Internet measurement tools...but Alexa is good for getting an idea of what search engines are considering "top performers."
The higher a websites Alexa ranking, the higher "authority" that site receives from search engines.
Having higher search engine authority means it is much easily to get found online through search engines.
Viewing the latest rankings, News & Info stations lead the pack with ten within the Top 20. Corus has 9 in the Top 20, while CBC has 4, Astral has 2, NewCap has 2, CTV has 1 and Rogers has 1. Toronto's airport and business station is also in the Top 20 (in March 2007, it was the "station" with the most Alexa web traffic).
Curiously, Virgin Radio doesn't appear to be captured accurately by Alexa. It doesn't include any of the Virgin station on their list. When searching Alexa for the individual Virgin station traffic rankings, each market's stations (Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver) don't show up. Instead, only the main domain (virginradio.com) appears (the station sites are found their sub-domains). Collectively, all Virgin Radio station would rank 26th, just behind CHOM and ahead of Rock 101.
Prior to the Virgin flip, Mix 96 in Montreal was a Top 20 online web traffic radio station.
Here's the latest Alexa search for Canada's top 20 radio station traffic rankings (June 2009):
1) CBC Radio - British Columbia (www.cbc.ca/bc) (CBC)

CanCon Acquisitions: Astral Officially Buys Standard Radio in Canada
Labels: Astral Media, BBM, Canada, Consolidation, Media Trend Watching, Mergers and Acquisitions, Radio Group, Ratings, Standard Radio, Super-sizing
Fresh from this week's Spring 2007 Canadian radio ratings (pdf) from BBM, Astral Media announced their purchase of Standard Radio has been officially accepted and approved by both companies.
The transaction is still subject to customary conditions, including a review by the Competition Bureau and the approval of the CRTC. If fully approved by the government, its expected to finally close and trade hands in early 2008. Once done, it would create a new owner for the title of Largest Radio Broadcasting Group in Canada.
The big get bigger and the super-sizing radio trend of the past year continues in Canada (although not in the same way as it's been lately in the U.S.).
According to All Access.com this morning:"ASTRAL MEDIA makes it official and announces a definitive agreement to buy STANDARD RADIO for C$1.08 billion (C$880 million cash and the rest in Astral Class A non-voting shares). Astral adds 52 stations across Canada in the deal, plus INTEGRATED MEDIA SALES, SOUND SOURCE NETWORKS, STANDARD INTERACTIVE, and CBC affiliates CFTK-TV/TERRACE, BC and CJDC-TV/DAWSON CREEK, BC. The companies had earlier announced that Astral had entered into exclusive negotiations to buy Standard."
More importantly, it expands Astral Media beyond just its French-language radio properties, absorbing Standard's national English-radio market presence...and placing Astral Media (in combination with Standard) in a new multi-media head-to-head competitive Battle of the Titans with Corus Entertainment -- which will get bumped in status to 2nd-largest radio group of owned properties in Canada.
Next move?
Correction: Although Standard Radio did sell off its Standard Interactive division in the Astral Media acqusition, apparently Standard's President/CEO Gary Slaight is keeping some key brands.
The Globe and Mail reports Standard will be holding onto its Iceberg Radio assets (as well as its stake in Sirius Canada) and not sell Iceberg in the Astral Media acquistion. (thanks for the tip, Captain Phil!)

Most Popular Canadian Radio Stations Online
Labels: Airport Info, Alexa, Canada, CMW, Internet, Radio, Radio Stations, streaming, web traffic
Now that the Canadian Music Week Conference is wrapped up and the awards for "Best Stations" handed out, which stations get the most online traffic?
Interestingly, as of today March 12th, the #1 site is not a music format or your typical News/Talk format. It's Airport Talk All The Time on CFYZ 1280 AM and available through www.gtaa.com -- the voice of Canada's busiest international airport, Toronto's Pearson International. They broadcast arrivals, departures, traffic, weather, travel stories and aviation announcements.
In Canada, Alexa says it is ranked 1,138th in total traffic.
3/27 Update: RadioandRecords.com reports that "CFYZ-AM/Toronto -- the Greater Toronto Airports Authority's information station -- is flipping to business talk on April 9 as CFBN. The station will continue running airport traffic reports and travel programming."
#2 CKWX is ranked 3,469th -- with a substantial drop over the past 6 months.
According to Alexa.com's traffic ratings, here are the most visited Canadian radio station sites:1. CFYZ 1280 AM (Pearson International Airport/Toronto)
2. CKWX - News 1130 (Rogers/Vancouver)
3. CKOI FM 96.9 (Corus/Montreal)
4. VOCM Radio (VOCM/Newfoundland)
5. CHUM 104.5 FM (CHUM/Toronto)
6. Radio Énergie (Astral/Montreal)
7. CKNW 980 AM (Corus/Vancouver)
8. 102.1FM The Edge (Corus/Toronto)
9. Mix 96 (Standard/Montreal)
10. CFOX 93.3 - The Fox (Cous/Vancouver)

State of the Canadian music/record label industry
Labels: Canada, Digital, Music, Radio, Record industry trends
As the Canadian music industry prepares for the CMW Conference in Toronto next month, the mood will be mixed. Radio realises it is holding steady (in terms of overall listening patterns, including total hours) despite all the digital pressures. Revenues are up and investment in new media extension projects continue to happen. Compared to the U.S., Canadian radio certainly seems more robust.
As the Jointblog pointed out last summer, there are substantial media trend differences between the Canadian and U.S. radio industries lately.
The Canadian record industry, though, is feeling the same hurt as their U.S. counterparts, with all majors making tough staff cuts in operations to counter changes in retail sales. According to Nielsen Soundscan Canada and Nielsen BDS airplay monitoring analysis of the record industry in 2006:> Overall music purchases were up nearly 10% from 2005.
Hold on because it's still a bumpy ride.
> Nearly 15 million digital tracks were purchased; an increase of 122% over 2005.
> The top 200 tracks accounted for nearly 20% of all track purchases.
> However, overall Album sales (including Albums and Track Equivalent Album sales) declined 3.2% compared to 2005.
> Total album sales declined 4.7% compared to 2005.
> Chain music stores accounted for 66% of all album sales, down from 71% in 2005.
> Classical and Country albums were the only two genres that gained in sales over 2005; up 21% and 15% respectively.
> Consistent with the previous two years, 25% of total album sales occurred during the Holiday Season (last 6 weeks of year).
